No matter where you stand financially, saving money is always important. Have you got bored trying out the traditional ways to save money?
If so, then check out some of the unusual (some might be a bit weird) ways to save your precious dollars:
1.) Use Baby Powder for greasy hair
If you are wasting tons of money on expensive dry shampoos, I have a cheaper solution for you. Use baby powder and ditch the fancy-priced dry shampoos forever. Rub some portions of baby powder into the roots of your hair and get rid of the greasiness at once.
2.) Wash your hair once a week
It requires a lot of water to wash your hair, especially if you have long hair. So, instead of shampooing daily, wash your hair once a week. By shampooing once a week, you can save money on water bills and conserve water as well.
3.) Unsubscribe to useless emails
Retailer emails trigger our impulse buying instinct. As a result of which, we purchase items that we usually don’t require. Besides filling our inboxes, these emails help us waste our precious dollars. If you have subscribed to these emails, you must immediately unsubscribe them in order to stop misusing your hard earned money.
4.) Give up couponing
Believe it or not, coupons lead to overspending. The 10% off on the deals are actually tricks to entice you to spend more. So, instead of using coupons, find out other ways to save money like:
- Shop on Wednesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays to get extra discounts and special deals,
- Buy things in bulk (especially groceries) to save more,
- Shop in advance in order to cut down high shipping costs,
- Hit the stores with a shopping list to avoid impulsive buying,
- Bargain with the shopkeeper to lower the price of the items,
- Shop from garage sales and cheap stores, and so on
5.) Set a time for shopping
By spending the whole day in a mall you purchase things, which you usually don’t require. The next time you visit a mall, make sure you shop within a limited time or before you have to go somewhere else. It helps you spend less and thus, you can save more.
6.) Wash utensils in a sink full of water
Ditch the dishwasher and save on water and electricity bills. Instead, wash utensils by hand and in a sink full of water. However, using a dishwasher saves your time too. It’s possible as hand washing utensils are quicker than washing them in the dishwasher. Plus, you can skip the task of emptying the dishwasher after the dishes are cleaned.
7.) Save condiments from restaurants
You may think that how saving those mini packets of ketchup and seasoning can save you money. But believe me, saving condiments can actually reduce your kitchen costs. So, when you’re enjoying your french fries at home, you can use those condiments and save your precious dollars on a bottle of ketchup or seasoning salt.
8.) Marry a frugal person
Now, this is really unusual. But, it can help you save a ton of money if you’re not good at managing finances. Plus, marrying someone frugal will make you more responsible with money.
9.) Flush your toilets less
I know it’s super crazy. But, you can give it a try (if it’s yellow let it mellow, if it’s brown flush it down) if you live alone. Nuff said!
10.) Keep a water bottle in the toilet tank
Fill a capped water bottle with sand or pebbles and put it in the back of your toilet tank. It helps to reduce water wastage and hence, you can save almost $100 a year on water bills.
11.) Eat raw veggies
Since vegetables are cheaper than meat, consuming uncooked veggies help you save money. The calculation goes like this – when you don’t turn on the stove, you save on energy bills. Moreover, raw veggies are healthy too because you’re not frying them in oil.
12.) Go to sleep early so you can wake early
You must have heard these words of Benjamin Franklin, “early to bed and early to rise, makes a man healthy, wealthy, and wise”, isn’t it? But, do you follow it? If not, then start following it from today. It’s really useful.
I don’t know whether or not going to bed and waking up early will make you wise. But, it’ll surely make you healthy and wealthy. If you wake up early in the morning, you’ll get ample time to exercise and stay healthy. Plus, you can also lower your electricity bill by taking advantage of daylight as much as you can.
13.) Drink tea instead of coffee
Tea bags are cheaper than coffee beans. So, by switching from coffee to tea you can save quite a lot of money with time. Since tea bags can be reused, you can save even more.
14.) Make money starting a competition
This type of competition will entice you to save more than usual. So, start a money saving competition with your family and friends to secure your finances. Make sure to keep a prize at the end of the competition to help you boost your confidence.
15.) Unplug appliances when not in use
Plugged-in appliances use lower levels of energy which adds up over time. Before going to bed take a tour of your house and unplug appliances like TV, DVD player, oven, computer, toaster, and so on which are not in use.
If you follow these unique ways, you can see your money grow over time.
