Some people think that working from home is a complete waste of a college degree. I’m here to say that those people are absolutely wrong.

There are ways to work at home in just about every industry, no matter what your degree is. That said, some degrees and professional industry certifications that have a clearer work-at-home career path than others.

Have no fear! If your days in a traditional office are numbered, or even over, there are still ways you can put your education and experience to work from home. Here are just a few ideas to get you started:

Admin and Support

Are you a Certified Administrative Assistant? Do you hold certificates or specialized training in widely used software like Microsoft Word or Excel? Is your background solid in any kind of administrative or support role? If so, you’ve got a clear path in at-home customer support or as a virtual assistant. As the Internet-based economy continues to grow, these at-home support roles are only going to increase, and you can find work that’s as structured as a 9-5 job or as self-directed as you want.

Writing and Social Media

“They” say there are no jobs for English and Psychology majors, but they’re wrong. If you have a solid history writing newsletters or blog posts for work, or if you’re even becoming a Certified Social Media Strategist, there are quite a few opportunities for you. Writing and social media tap both tap into not only English and psychology, but anthropology, sociology, communications, and other social sciences.

One obvious fit would be working as a Social Media Manager, especially if you enjoy social media. You should also look into opportunities to be a content writer, sometimes also called a freelance writer or a blogger for hire. And don’t forget about starting your own blog — there’s definitely a serious income opportunity as a blogger. You can even use your degree to guide the niche you pursue.

Bookkeeping

Maybe you have an accounting degree or some experience with bookkeeping, accounting, or tax prep. As a Certified Bookkeeper, you can solidify your training and use those same skills virtually. Picking up a QuickBooks Certification may have qualified you for a raise at your regular job, and having one when you work from home means you can specialize and find even better opportunities. Being able to “do the books” will also make you more marketable if you’re looking for work with a small business.

IT

Working from home almost always involves using technology. If you have any IT education or an IT Certification, you’ve got a solid opportunity working from home in technical support or an IT Helpdesk role. These are moving to telecommute more and more, and the available jobs are only going to increase.

Medical Billing and Coding

And of course, medical billing and coding is one of the most well known work-from-home jobs, and with good reason. They’re the perfect way to work from home, and there’s a solid market for people with certifications in Medical Administrative Assisting, and Billing and Coding. With a formal certification, you can find work doing these same tasks at home instead of in a medical office.

That’s Not All

These are just a few ideas to get you thinking about how you can use your degree when you work from home. Having an advanced education is something to be proud of, and there’s no reason to abandon it when you decide to leave the traditional workforce and start working from home. Picking up a special certificate or formal training to solidify your resume can “bridge the gap” if you’re unsure of your chances of finding your perfect work-from-home arrangement, and it will help you to never feel like your degree was a waste of time and money. Never underestimate the power of confidence… and be confident in your degree!
