Online tutoring jobs can be a great way to make money from home, especially if you are looking to work part-time. And they aren’t just available to those with a formal teaching degree. There are many opportunities open to college students, former teachers and tutors and industry professionals.
What types of online tutoring jobs are available?
These teaching jobs run the gamut from K-12 coursework to English as a Second Language (ESL) to ACT/SAT and college prep. The complexity of the subject will determine the tutor qualifications.
What does online tutoring pay?
I was surprised to find this isn’t a high paying gig. A lot of sites pay tutors only $8 to $12 per hour. That being said, there are several sites that offer employee positions. Benefits are hard to come by in the work at home world so perks like vacation pay, retirement contributions and employer paid taxes are certainly something to consider.
If you decide to go out on your own and start a tutoring home business, the going rate for subjects like math and English is around $20 per hour. Specialty subjects and positions offering a more personalized approach can go up to $50 per hour.

Studypool – Earn up to 60K a year tutoring, only 15 % commission
Chegg – pay $20 per hour, you must be enrolled in college or a college graduate to apply. You also must have a Facebook profile to become a tutor.
Tutor.com – college students, teachers and industry professionals are encouraged to apply, there is a current need for math, science and foreign language tutors
e-Tutor – K-12 tutoring jobs, Bachelor’s degree required, teaching certificate preferred
TutorVista – you must be a post graduate in your preferred subject and able to work a minimum of 4 hours per day
Aim-for-A – Teaching certificate and Bachelor’s degree required, pay is reportedly $10-$15 per hour
EduwizardS – set your own rates, Bachelor’s degree or higher required
SmartThinking – paid training, 9 hour per week minimum commitment, pay is hourly
TutorABC – this is a very popular ESL site, tutors are paid around $8 to $10 per hour, university degree or previous ESL experience required as is the ability to obtain TESOL/TEFL certification
Englishunt – teaching certification and four-year degree required
ISUS – ESL or teaching experience required
Language Development System – American-owned ESL site, teaching or English degree preferred, past teaching experience preferred
PrepNow – Bachelor’s degree and two years experience required, composite 28 on the ACT or a 650 on the SAT Math and SAT Verbal/CR, weekend and weeknight availability
Elevate Learning – primarily math and reading tutoring, pay is $12 per hour, teaching or tutoring experience and four-year degree required
Connections Academy – teaching certificate required
K12 – benefits available, Bachelor’s or Master’s degree and experience required, teaching certificate also require
goFLUENT – ESL tutoring, employee positions available, minimum commitment of 20 hours per week, hiring in Florida, Kansas, Missouri, Oregon, New York and Washington, prioritizing candidates who speak fluent Chinese (Mandarin), Italian, Japanese, Korean, German, Spanish, or Portuguese, in addition to excellent English
Open English – ESL tutoring in small four-person virtual classrooms, English teaching experience required, Spanish or Portuguese writing and speaking teachers needed.
Cambly – Pays $.17/minute for time spent tutoring ($10.20/hour). Payment is made by PayPal weekly.
Instructional Connections – A Master’s degree is required
Skooli – Master’s degree or previous ESL experience needed
Yup – No degree or experience required, but you will need to pass the necessary testing

VIPKID – This one is gaining in popularity among my readers. You will need a bachelor’s degree and experience working with kids ages 5-12. You also need to commit to at least 7.5 hours per week.

There will always be a demand for private tutors. If you are a great teacher and knowledgeable in a particular subject, there is likely a parent out there willing to give you a shot. Here are a few considerations when starting a home business:
- What subjects can you tutor?
- What age groups can you help?
- Will you tutor your students at your home, in their home or online?
- What supplies will you need? (Pencils, textbooks, workbooks, whiteboard, scheduling software, online classroom software)
- How will you attract new clients?
- Does your jurisdiction have any special licensing requirements?
- Will you need special insurance if tutoring out of your home?
- How much do you need to charge to turn a profit?
