Locating funding for terminal Master’s programs can sometimes be tricky. Students may run into the problem of locating scholarships that cater to only undergraduate students or that are only offered to students pursuing a doctoral degree. But fear not as there are actually many scholarships that were created with Master’s students in mind.
First of all, some students can qualify for funding by completing the FAFSA or through an employer sponsored tuition assistance program. If neither of those are great options for you, then consider some of the scholarships below:
Jacob J. Javits Fellowship Program awards up to $30,000 to students in Master’s programs. The recipients are selected based on academic excellence, demonstrated financial need, and future potential. Students in most fields of humanities, social sciences, and fine arts are eligible for funding through the Jacob J. Javits Fellowship Program. These fellowships are awarded through the Department of Education and all applicants must complete the FAFSA.
The Paul and Daisy Soros Fellowships for New Americans enables new immigrants who hold a green card to receive money to support their Master’s program of study. Thirty scholarships are offered to new immigrants, or their children, annually and funding provides up to a $25,000 stipend plus half of tuition and fees (up to a maximum of $20,000 per year). Applicants must be 31 years of age or younger. Applications must be received by November 1st and applicants are selected based on previous academic qualifications. Personal characteristics, such as innovation and creativity, are also considered when evaluating applicants. A total of 7 finalists will be selected for an in-person interview. NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship Program offers over 170 scholarships annually. These scholarships are geared towards student-athletes who excel both in the sports area and in the classroom. In order to be eligible, students must be in their last season of NCAA eligibility and have a minimum GPA of 3.20. Additionally, students must obtain a recommendation and have participated as a member of a varsity team in college. Additionally, they must plan to enroll in graduate level coursework and show that they are a good citizen and role model. This award will cover up to $7,500 in tuition expenses.
Fulbright U.S. Student Program also provides scholarships for Master’s level students. The application deadline is in October of each year. The amount of the award varies, but typically covers the full cost of the program plus additional expenses, such as books and airfare. Additionally, the Fulbright program also has other scholarships available for graduate students, so you may want to explore their website in more depth. Many of these scholarships are geared specially towards students interested in research. Additionally, there are few limitations on the types of programs of studies or research projects that will be funded. Students who are selected excel academically.
